Caffeine
It's a real bummer, but I have given up caffeine. I am re-discovering sleep, and my baby slowly is sleeping better (still up two times a night, but I'm hoping that will improve as we go). But I have gone so long without good sleep, with two babies, two years apart, that my nervous system is feeling ragged and I was having occasional insomnia. That is not okay! I found that I have become sensitive to caffeine. I used to be able to drink a 20 ounce coffee at 10 pm and sleep soundly. That was my one vice! I don't smoke, I don't drink, I eat healthy with minimal sugar. Come on! I just want to drink yerba mate every day, but apparently my body has vetoed that. So sad.
The other day I had two, two-shot decaf americanos in the morning, and I slept lousy that night (decaf still has caffeine, just not as much). I think that's ridiculous. But I'm getting the message, so currently I'm drinking a one-shot decaf americano in the morning, and then I drink rooibos tea during the day to satisfy my tea cravings. It's not bad, and my system does feel calmer than when I was drinking hojicha tea and occasional yerba mate. Never mind delights like Lapsang Souchong, and good old English Breakfast tea.
I still have hopes that once my sleep improves for real and my body settles out, I'll be able to go back to drinking a reasonable amount of delicious caffeine. But we'll see. For now, if I have to choose, I prefer sleep to yummy beverages.
